This factsheet has been developed to answer some of the common questions that are asked about trans people, and to tackle some of the myths and misconceptions that are displayed in the media.

Trans people are one of the most excluded groups both in society and in the workplace. It is unfortunately very common for the trans community to face discrimination, prejudice, isolation, and abuse, both in public and at work. This guide has been created to help organisations understand gender identity and the term ‘trans’, as well as how to acknowledge, raise awareness, support and celebrate all gender identities in the workplace.

This judgement overturned one of the most controversial decisions in UK employment law history made by the Employment Appeal Tribunal which suggested that an employee who was dismissed for standing for election for the British National Party (BNP) could claim direct discrimination “on racial grounds”.
