What is the day about?
Holocaust Memorial Day is a day for remembering all those who have died in genocides, including the 6 million Jews murdered during the Holocaust and millions of others who died during the Nazi persecution and in genocides that followed in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.
When does the day take place?
Holocaust Memorial Day takes place on Tuesday 27th January 2026.
27th January marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp.
What is the theme for this year?
The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day 2026 is to be announced. Please check this page closer to the time of the event for an update about the theme.
Why is purple the day’s colour?
The purple flame is the symbol of the Holocaust Memorial Trust. Holocaust Memorial Day Trust (HMDT) is a registered charity, funded by the UK Government, to promote and support HMD.
At 4pm on 27th January people across the nation will light candles and put them safely in their windows to:
- Remember those who were murdered for who they were
- Stand against prejudice and hatred today
Iconic buildings and landmarks will light up in purple during this powerful national moment of commemoration and solidarity.
