George Floyd’s Anniversary is a day of remembrance held annually on May 25th to honour George Floyd’s life and the fight against racism.

Why is there a George Floyd day?

On May 25th, 2020, George Floyd was killed by a police officer in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His death sparked a global movement against police brutality and systemic racism. In his memory, we commemorate this day as George Floyd’s Anniversary, a day to remember his life and the fight for racial justice that continues in his name.

The murder of George Floyd was not an isolated incident. It was another tragic example of systemic racism in society. The video footage of his killing shocked the world and ignited protests, marches, and calls for reform.

Here are a few quick facts to know:

  • George Floyd was born in Fayetteville, North Carolina, on October 14, 1973
  • George Floyd’s death sparked a global movement for racial justice, with protests and demonstrations taking place in countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, France, Australia, and Brazil.
  • In Minnesota, the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act was passed in July 2020, which includes measures such as banning chokeholds and requiring police officers to intervene if they witness excessive use of force.
  • His family established the George Floyd Memorial Foundation to honour his life and continue his legacy

George Floyd’s Anniversary is a day to remember and reflect on the work that still needs to be done to eradicate racism and inequality. In the workplace, we can honour his legacy by taking the following actions:

  • Observe a moment of silence: At the start of the workday, remember George Floyd and all the victims of racism.
  • Educate yourself: Take time to learn about the history of racism and how it still manifests in our society. Read books, watch documentaries, or attend training on racism.
