1) Can you tell us how you came to be in your role?

When I reflect, I have always enjoyed working with people, whatever that looked like at the time. I actually started out in IT, on a Service Desk, I was one of those people who advises you to reboot when you have a problem! What I loved was connecting with colleagues; helping and coaching them to resolve their issues.  This evolved in becoming an IT Trainer, then I changed organisations to become an L&D advisor.

An opportunity became available to become the L&D manager, and after a bit of influencing from those around me I applied and was successful.  I was privileged to work on so many projects that helped influence the culture, including developing leadership programmes, working on colleague engagement, health, wellbeing and inclusion.

The organisation I worked at was a member of Inclusive Employers so I had experience from a member perspective.  The role came through on one of the regular member newsletters and captured my interest – I was ready for a change, felt I had the knowledge and experience and liked the idea of working with lots of new people, so I gave it a go and here I am!

2) Can you share an ‘Inclusive moment’ with us – a time when you felt included either at work or in your personal life?

I am deep in thought about this one. I would answer this by saying I’ve had a number of inclusion nudges in my life, which have influenced who I am today both personally and professionally.  Throughout life’s challenges the kindness and support of people is astonishing.  From people taking me in and looking after me in my younger days, to spotting potential in me and pushing me forward in the workplace.

3) What do you love most about your role?

People! I love building relationships, connecting and working with others.  Learning about organisations and the individuals in them, what the joys and challenges are, and how can we work together to positively influence the culture. In my  Head of Organisational Culture and Development role I have internal focus, which again is all about continual culture development to help everyone be at their very best.

4) What is a typical day like for you?

I’m not sure there is a typical day, as they are all varied. But they are always centred around people, which could be internally or externally focused.  These could be virtual meetings, virtual or face-to-face training, consultancy and of course all those lovely e-mails!  The days are always full and go very quickly.

5) What’s been you most memorable moment in your inclusion career?

At Inclusive Employers I’m really proud of the relationships I have built with members and recognise the privileged position I am to help influence cultures of other organisations.

From previous roles, I think it has to be the work I have done around gender equality. From increasing female apprentices in trade roles to talking about periods and menopause in the workplace. I also know that the awareness I led on imposter syndrome empowered lots of colleagues – who have gone onto do amazing things.
