Peter Howarth - Inclusive Employers

Peter is a seasoned commercial leader who has spent over two decades working in talent acquisition and talent development, creating and implementing strategies to deliver business value. He is a commercially astute, fast paced and culturally inclusive leader with a strong commercial foundation in the talent services industry.

He is passionate about helping organisations thrive by working with them to create the strongest possible leadership teams. Much of his work in his last role as Co-CEO at Armstrong Craven involved working with organisations to improve the representation in their leadership teams, directly leading to improved performance and enhanced EVP.

Peter is a father of five and volunteers for sepsis awareness charities. Peter holds an Honours Bachelor’s degree in Combined Social Sciences from Durham University. In his spare time, Peter is an active sportsperson playing hockey, skiing and enjoying outdoor hiking and experiencing new cultures through travel, most recently to Jordan to see the ancient City of Petra.

What are you looking forward to about your role at Inclusive Employers?

I have spent most of my career to date helping both client organisations and the companies I have worked for thrive by building the best possible teams. As employees, consumers, investors and society continue to rightly shine a spotlight on improving representation at all levels of every organisation I am energised by the role that Inclusive Employers can play in helping organisations get better at making their workplaces inclusive for everyone.

Most organisations focus on the ‘D’ of ‘D&I’ by hiring diverse talent, but so few get the ‘I’ of inclusion right. At Inclusive Employers we will continue to lead the way and shape the agenda on what good inclusion is for organisations in the UK and beyond, and that is a hugely exciting prospect.

What has been your biggest achievement to date?

Beyond my family and my (very limited) sporting successes I have to say my biggest achievement to date is being offered the opportunity to lead Inclusive Employers. As a 51-year-old white man it would have been easy for the organisation to overlook me and I think it says a huge amount about the culture and true view on inclusion that Inclusive Employers has that I was afforded the same opportunity to present myself as anyone else.

The interview process was extremely tough and rigorous, and for me to be offered the opportunity to be CEO of this wonderful and rapidly growing organisation is a huge honour.

What is the best advice you have ever been given?

I have been very lucky to work with and to know some outstanding people in my life. I have been given so many little pieces of advice over the years that have helped me to shape the way I work and how I manage people that picking just one is very difficult.

One of the pieces of advice I was given from a senior HR leader I have known for many years has stuck with me and is one I apply in both my professional and personal life, which is ‘You only truly regret the things that you don’t try’.

Tell us something about you that we might not know.

As someone who was born and brought up in Winchester my little claim to fame is one that I don’t think anyone would guess, even if they knew my surname was Howarth.

My parents were born and raised in Rochdale, and my great Uncle Jack played Albert Tatlock in Coronation Street from its first episode in 1960 until his death in 1984.
