Katie Burton-Sweeten - Inclusive Employers

Katie is the Campaigns Marketing Manager at Inclusive Employers, and has a background in marketing, design, project management as well as operations. She has worked across a multitude of industries such as: medical R&D, franchising and at a social enterprise.

During her time at the latter, she became the internal lead on I&D and pushed for, developed, and delivered better people/HR practices and policies alongside her marketing and project work!

What do you enjoy about your role at Inclusive Employers?

That I am helping connect inclusioneers with our brilliant products, services, and content through insightful, value-led campaigns. The best part is that through this there will be a positive impact on people in their workplaces and beyond.

Plus, I get to use my creativity and logic for a mission that truly matters, alongside people that are committed to seeing a more equitable, inclusive society.

What has been your biggest achievement to date?

Receiving feedback from colleagues and friends that I made them feel they could be their authentic selves more.

Although I knew I was doing my best to encourage and support them, I didn’t realise the level of impact it would have on them. Knowing that I’ve helped others feel confident in not shrinking themselves down or feeling okay with (and proud of) themselves has been incredibly powerful for me to know.

What is the best advice you have ever been given?

Mine is a quote I read online a few years ago: “Speak up even if your voice shakes”

Being on the introverted side, this feels like a difficult task and for some of us introverts, it is impossible — which we shouldn’t feel guilty about. But these words always come back to me when I see injustice, so I use my voice in my own way, even when I am terrified, because what if I’m the only voice safe to raise that or what if I’m the only person noticing?

Tell us something about you that we might not know

I was a bit of a maverick as a child as I made a lifelong commitment at the age of five to become vegetarian and have stuck by it. My family aren’t vegetarian in the slightest! There is a strong chance that Babe the pig had something to do with it.
