Religion and Belief - Inclusive Employers

Religion and Belief

Religion and Belief play an integral part in the lives of many people around the world. Colleagues should feel confident that they can bring that part of them to work, that they can undertake the practices that are important to them and share as much as they wish about their faith without fear of discrimination.

Religion and Belief: Why You Need it

Religion and Belief play an integral part in the lives of many people around the world. Acknowledging and accepting the importance of religion and philosophical beliefs, or the absence of beliefs is, therefore, a key element of an inclusive workplace.

Colleagues should feel confident that they can bring that part of them to work, that they can undertake the practices that are important to them and share as much as they wish about their faith without fear of discrimination. Religion can sometimes be viewed as a problematic topic to raise in the workplace, with the potential to lead to conflict, given the strength of opinion and emotion it can generate.  This means that it is often overlooked as part of inclusion work and ignored in the workplace, which can make colleagues who are practising more reluctant and less comfortable to share this aspect of their lives.

In our diverse, and at times fractured, society acknowledging and celebrating the diversity of faiths and beliefs, including colleagues without a belief, is a key way to bring people together and unfortunately, if ignored can also be a source of misunderstandings, subtle or more overt exclusion or even conflict in the workplace.

Inclusive Employers Religion and Belief training explores how religion is experienced in the workplace, the steps we can take to increase visibility and openness around religious beliefs and the tangible benefits this will bring to your organisation.

Religion and Belief: What You Will Learn

We will consider what you can do to increase multi-faith understanding in your organisation and create a workplace that is ready to embrace religion and belief, along with other areas of difference. We will also focus on two current areas of concern: anti-Semitism and Islamophobia; exploring the source of these entrenched viewpoints; understanding their prevalence and how they manifest in society and the workplace. An overview of what we will cover is:

  • Why embracing difference on the basis of religion and faith is important in the workplace;
  • Data on religious intolerance;
  • The nature of anti-Semitism and Islamophobia;
  • How religious intolerance is experienced in society and the workplace;
  • The steps employers can take to create workplaces where religion is visible and staff with religious beliefs feel included.
