In my role as Senior HR Diversity and Inclusion Manager at the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), I wanted to explore the culture of inclusion beyond the Civil Service and to learn theory about how our behaviour affects those around us as well as unpacking the thinking that diversity doesn’t work in isolation - to really have impact and be included, individuals need to have a voice: be heard, be represented and to participate.
The CPS have been members of Inclusive Employers since 2016 and I confidently chose them as my accredited personal development provider because I knew they would support me in my studies and that their training qualification would be delivered to a high standard. The Inclusive Employers CMI Level 6 qualification met both my criteria of being recognised outside the Civil Service and internally by my colleagues. It was important for me to undertake a course that was accredited because I wanted it to reflect and recognise my career, knowledge and expertise in Inclusion & Diversity.
CMI Level 6 course programme provided the perfect combination of classroom-based learning, home assignments and study days. The course provided a positive learning environment which was motivating and helped me make space to work on my assignments. Although there is a time limit to complete the course, I was grateful for the opportunity to work at my own pace and not have the pressure of deadlines. It was fantastic to work with others on the course: it was a great platform to share and learn about each other’s inclusion and diversity practices. We were a small group which allowed for productive relationships to develop, both amongst the learners and tutors.
This course truly delivered for me. It has confirmed that I do have in-depth knowledge of inclusion and diversity, which has given me a huge sense of self-worth. For my organisation, it is important that their staff are subject experts and study towards external qualifications, and my colleagues and line manager showed great support throughout the course. Day-to-day I am advising and promoting best ways of working that need to be backed-up by facts and proven theory to deliver the most efficient and inclusive working environment… Now I am CMI Level 6 accredited, I feel I have combined my experience and skills with increased knowledge and confidence to do just this!
