Supporting Parents and Carers: Why You Need it
As caring responsibilities evolve, flexible and family-friendly working is increasingly valued by employees throughout their careers. Research published by Working Families in 2020 indicates childcare as a concern for 73% of parents, rising to 83% for millennial parents. Concerns over flexibility started when children were in pre-school (66% of mothers and 63% of fathers) and continued through to transition to secondary school (41% fathers and 32% of mothers). In addition, 59% of working parents said they needed to factor childcare options into decision making about whether or not to accept a new job or promotion.
When parenting and caring were combined, two-thirds of working parents with caring responsibility for an elderly relative or other adult said that work impinged on their ability to care for them. 68% per cent said their work-life was becoming increasingly stressful, compared with 42% of working parents without caring responsibility for an adult.
Data shows that seven million people in the UK are parents and carers, so addressing these concerns and ensuring your organisation is responsive and understands the challenges faced for this population will be fundamental. Inclusive Employers Supporting Parents and Carers training will help you to create inclusive workplaces where these colleagues can thrive and are not apprehensive about balancing their personal and professional responsibilities.
