Welcome to National Inclusion Week 2023: Take Action Make Impact! We are so glad to have you joining us to celebrate this year.
This panel launch is for our dedicated members organisations only, as we want to thank you for joining us for yet another National Inclusion Week and celebrate the start of the week with you!
The theme this year, Take Action Make Impact, centres around the idea that we are all trying to reach effective, positive and sustainable impact through inclusion action for all those we work with and for ourselves. That is the ultimate aim of inclusion and diversity and why it’s so important to continue striving for truly inclusive workplaces – to create equity and equality impact for all.
Join us to kick off your National Inclusion Week, discuss Take Action Make Impact and hear from a range of panellists on what Take Action Make Impact means to them and how we can embed impact into our day to day inclusion practices.
Many organisations in sport and physical activity find it difficult to engage new audiences and often continue to attract similar participants year after year. We know that the sport and physical activity sector aims to be more inclusive and wants to ensure that everyone can access the many benefits that being active brings whether that’s as a participant, volunteer or member of staff. However, if you don’t see yourself reflected in certain areas of sport and physical activity, how will you know it’s a place for you?
Our panel discussion will provide real life examples of organisations whose inclusion activity is helping to engage a broader group of people from more diverse groups than they have before.
Progress in society and the workplace will always come up against some resistance. Those in a position of privilege and power, knowingly or unknowingly, often struggle to give up some of that privilege and power to make space for others.
The term ‘woke’, originating in the Black community in the US meaning to be aware of the oppression that Black people experience in the US, has been mischaracterised as ‘going too far’ or ‘creating something out of nothing’ to give credibility to resisting change and to distract from real issues.
So, how do we challenge this in our organisations, and how do we get buy in from senior leadership who might not consider I&D work a priority?

Many organisations struggle with having a diverse and proportional representation in their workforce, despite having the best intentions. Why is this the case? There are many barriers which marginalised people face when seeking employment, so if your aim is to have a truly diverse and inclusive workplace, start at the beginning. Make your application process accessible, signal that your organisation is a safe space, show up through your business practices and policies and remove barriers from the interview process. These are all ways you can ensure you are recruiting inclusively.
If you work in the Inclusion and Diversity space, you are probably aware of how easy it is to burn out in this line of work. Whether its due to budget constraints, lack of buy in from leadership, lack of capacity and resources, giving too much of yourself or all of these things and more, it can be all too easy to suddenly find yourself burned out and struggling with your mental health.
In this sector, we need to be really mindful to set boundaries and self care. As the old saying goes ‘you can’t pour from an empty cup’. We can only make change and impact for others when we are taking care of ourselves first. This means that we can’t always get all the things we want done at once, or taking smaller steps to achieve bigger goals, and that’s okay.
This session will provide tools and techniques for individuals working or wishing to work in multicultural environments to better succeed at understanding and interacting in culturally diverse settings, wherever you operate. We will explore how culture influences behaviours and interactions, and shapes how we may interpret and navigate situations at work and beyond. Cultural awareness helps unleash organisational diversity and inclusion, foster good relations with colleagues as well as customers and partners – which is why you shouldn’t miss this webinar!
