Feel confident to lead a week of impactful inclusion

Celebrating National Inclusion Week (NIW) can take a lot of preparation and can require substantial support from all areas of the team. It is really important that leaders are engaged with your plans and objectives for NIW. These three top tips are designed to support leaders to understand their role in the celebrations, before, during and after the week.

When preparing for National Inclusion Week you may face challenges and resistance to progress, but whole team buy in is more achievable when you have the visible support of the leadership team.

Read on to discover our three key pieces of advice for leaders during NIW.

1. Role model by engaging and demonstrating commitment to inclusion

Employees look to leaders as the embodiment of what the organisation prioritises and represents.

When leaders demonstrate their commitment to inclusion it shows the team that, not only is this something that they should prioritise too, but it will make those who have previously been excluded, feel seen.

Encourage leaders to get involved by announcing your National Inclusion Week strategy early on, and by asking everyone to get involved.

“As a leader of an organisation, employees look to you as the embodiment of what the organisation prioritises and represents.”

2. Be prepared to get involved during NIW

How can leaders get involved during the week of NIW? Visibly involvement in the week will help demonstrate leader’s commitment to inclusion, internally and externally.

As a leader, can you:

  • Host an event during the week.
  • Open NIW with a talk about why you believe inclusion is important for your organisation and engage others with your message.
  • Share your organisations’ NIW commitment and activity on social media, so colleagues and stakeholders see you are engaged.

3. Provide additional resources and capacity to deliver National Inclusion Week

If leaders truly want to demonstrate commitment to inclusion, provide the NIW organising team with additional support, resources and capacity to be able to effectively plan and deliver a week of inclusion activity. This will send a clear message that inclusion is valued in your organisation, and that you trust your team to focus on inclusion that has impact and drives organisational change.
