The current landscape
The global approach to LGBTQ+ inclusion shows widening fractures. While the EU maintains broad commitment to LGBTQ+ equality, in the UK trans rights are increasingly under threat and the US is visibly retreating from LGBTQ+ protections. What felt like unstoppable progress in LGBTQ+ rights a few years ago now feels increasingly fragile. The UK has slipped to 22nd place in the Rainbow Index of LGBT rights, having topped the list just 10 years ago.
In the workplace, significant challenges persist, with 39% of LGBTQ+ employees still feeling the need to hide their sexuality or gender identity at work, and 31% reporting they wouldn’t feel comfortable reporting homophobic or biphobic bullying to their employer. These challenges multiply for those with intersecting marginalised identities – 42% of LGBTQ+ employees of colour report workplace discrimination in the US. Many LGBTQ+ staff, particularly trans and non-binary colleagues, are fearful about what’s next.
What actions can we take as employers this Pride month?
In these challenging times, your commitment to inclusion cannot be taken for granted. Reaffirm your commitment to LGBTQ+ inclusion this Pride season and check in with your LGBTQ+ network. Other actions you can take include:
- Focus on wellbeing. LGBTQ+ colleagues, particularly members of the trans and non-binary community, are likely to be stressed and worried right now. Check in with them and ensure they have support.
- Conduct listening exercises with LGBTQ+ colleagues and key stakeholders to surface blockers and areas of good practice. Understanding where gaps exist is the first step in developing your action plan.
- Empower your leaders to create psychological safety, to speak with clarity and care on LGBTQ+ inclusion, and to role model inclusive behaviours.
As an Inclusive Employers member, you gain access to our comprehensive resource library, regular webinars, and expert advice to support your LGBTQ+ inclusion strategy.

Leading organisations integrate LGBTQ+ inclusion as a core component of their People strategy rather than treating it as a standalone initiative. They embed inclusion at every level, maintain accountability through meaningful data, and create environments where LGBTQ+ professionals thrive. Achieving this requires sustained action beyond LGBT+ History Month and Pride celebrations – it demands systematic changes in how we create and sustain inclusive workplaces.
