What is National Inclusion Week?

National Inclusion Week® (NIW) is an annual event taking place every September that raises awareness of inclusion in the workplace and encourages organisations to take action to make inclusion an everyday reality. This year the event takes place from 15th – 21st September.

Why take part?

National Inclusion Week® provides organisations with a platform to highlight inclusion and diversity and encourage engagement with their employees. Many use this time to showcase yearly progress, launch new initiatives, or to bring their people together. Unlike many other events on the inclusion calendar, what makes National Inclusion Week® unique, and exciting is that is involves everyone. It’s a great week to discuss intersectional issues and include all your communities – across gender, race, religion, LGBTQ+, disabilities, carers and social mobility.

National Inclusion Week® will look different to every organisation. As the founders, we at Inclusive Employers are best placed to provide guidance to shape yours. From the National Inclusion Week® toolkit to public events as well as tailored in-house training, we can support you to arrange a celebration that works for your organisation.

Register now to be the first to hear about our events, get early access to our dedicated training, and secure resources before anyone else! Get ahead to ensure you have the most successful and impactful National Inclusion Week® yet.

National Inclusion Week 2025 theme

Each year, National Inclusion Week® is given a unique theme inspired what’s happening in society, as well as by conversations with our members and what our team of expert inclusion consultants are forecasting as areas of interest and focus for the year ahead.

The theme aims to provide a focus for the week. It acts as a tool to widely communicate why inclusion is so important, now more than ever. We also know that it will have the scope to have a long-lasting impact on your inclusion and diversity (I&D) discussions and plans for this year and the next.

With this in mind, Inclusive Employers are excited to announce that the theme for 2025’s National Inclusion Week® is…

‘Now is the Time’ – stylised as #NowIsTheTime on social media.

What the theme ‘Now is the Time’ means and why it’s important

With recent backlash against inclusion and diversity, particularly in the US, economic instability, and tightening budgets, those in I&D roles must innovate to maximise impact. This theme emphasises the importance of I&D, urgency, resilience, and the need to push forward – focusing on practical steps that make inclusion sustainable and embedded within our organisations.

Inclusive Employers’ Managing Director, Janet Tidmarsh, shares her thoughts on this year’s theme:

“I am delighted with this year’s theme of ‘Now is the Time’. With all the recent noise around I&D efforts and the debates that have been happening in the last few months, ‘Now is the Time’ to come together and demonstrate why inclusion is so important for so many people.

‘Now is the Time’ to share the realities of the barriers people in your organisation face.

‘Now is the Time’ to measure the impact that I&D is having – and talk to your organisation’s leaders about it.

‘Now is the Time’ to educate allies to support the inclusion of others.

With the support of organisations across the UK and beyond, let’s make this National Inclusion Week the biggest yet.”

Which current topics helped us to decide on ‘Now is the Time’

To understand the theme’s foundations in more detail, here are some of the key talking points raised and observations made that helped us arrive at ‘Now is the Time’ and why these topics need all of us to embrace the theme’s call to action.

Addressing the geo-political climate in response to inclusion and diversity

Inclusion and diversity have become an important and accepted part of HR strategies in recent years. Whilst there will always be different views on key topics, in recent months there has been a marked shift in discourse, most notably in the US. Legislative rollbacks in other countries and rising opposition have created a ripple effect; challenging workplace inclusion efforts across geographies.

‘Now is the Time’ is our chance to respond decisively. This means encouraging courageous conversations that proactively address misinformation, navigate discomfort, and strengthen the tangible benefits of inclusion – not just for underrepresented groups but for workplace culture, innovation, productivity, and long-term sustainability. We believe that workplace inclusion strategies drive business value, which is proven through many well-regarded studies. It isn’t just the right thing to do, it makes great business sense too.

Legislative changes

With the upcoming Employment Rights Bill (2024), set to be implemented between late 2025 and 2026, this bill has a strong basis of inclusion and will strengthen workers’ rights and enhance support for working families. Alongside changes to the minimum wage and statutory sick pay, plus further protection for those in low-paid or insecure jobs, these significant reforms represent some of the most substantial steps towards building fairer, more equitable workplaces.

‘Now is the Time’ for organisations to not only adapt to the changes already in effect but also to proactively prepare for upcoming reforms – ensuring long-term, sustainable inclusion.

Proving the value of inclusion

With rising employment costs and tighter budgets, inclusion and diversity professionals must be strategic and creative, and must measure the organisational impact they are having.

To secure long-term commitment, inclusion efforts must be backed by quality data that proves their business impact. Whether improving retention, nurturing innovation, or reducing workplace risks, measuring and communicating a return-on-investment (ROI) is essential. By demonstrating clear outcomes, organisations can build stronger business cases for inclusion, ensuring it remains a priority even in challenging times.

‘Now is the Time’ to move beyond good intentions and focus on high-value initiatives that drive real change.

Transformative not performative action

With increasing scrutiny on inclusion and diversity efforts, inclusion professionals must move beyond surface-level commitments and towards tangible, systemic change for their organisation. It’s not just about raising awareness but about embedding inclusion into workplace culture in a way that drives measurable, long-term impact.

‘Now is the Time’ for organisations to challenge any outdated practices, address systemic barriers, and take meaningful steps that create a more equitable and sustainable workplace for all.
