1) Can you tell us how you came to be in your role
I realised much later on in life what I wanted to be when I grow up, and you could argue that I grew up much later on in life. My values and purpose, together with wanting to make a difference for future generations is my motivation and what fuels my passion.
I see my children and do not want them to face some of the challenges I faced while I was growing up coming from an Ethnic minority background.
2) Can you share an ‘inclusion moment’ with us – a time when you have felt included either at work or in your personal life?
I was flying my mum out to Vancouver to go stay with my sister. My mum struggles with her mobility and needs to use a wheelchair, and then a Zimmer frame to help her walk. Unfortunately, we did not have the Zimmer with us (long story) to help us on the aircraft.
What we did have was the most helpful air steward who gently guided my mum to the toilet by placing her arms around his waist and encouraging her to shuffle along at her own pace. He was amazing and overcame any barrier I presented him with. I can honestly say that I would not have made it across to Canada without his help!
“I absolutely love working with our members and identifying ways to help them move to the next level of their inclusion journey.”
Find out how Baljit and our team can support your organisation on its inclusion journey3) What do you love most about your role?
I absolutely love working with our members and identifying ways to help them move to the next level of their inclusion journey. Having worked across several different sectors, more often than not, I feel I am well placed to provide the right solutions for our members.
4) What is a typical day like for you?
My days are varied and I am always learning new things which is a fantastic position to be. I could be checking in with a handful of our members and helping them deliver their ED&I strategy to delivering face-to-face or virtual training. Equally, I could be working on designing some training content for one of our members. Whatever it is my days are never dull or the same which I love.
5) What’s been your most memorable moment in your inclusion career?
Working with my mentor outside of my role and being challenged on my blind spots in this space. It is a continuous journey and one I find incredibly rewarding. We also work on ways to improve the service I give to my members and ultimately make me the best EDI professional I can be. I realise I am very privileged to be in this position!
