Mental Health & Safety

The mental health charity Mind estimate that 1 in 6 British workers are affected by conditions like anxiety, depression and stress every year.  But these are still taboo, especially at work.  It is not done to talk about feelings, and those who are most at risk find it particularly hard:  suicide is the leading cause of death among young men.  As employers we have a responsibility to build healthy workplaces and as individuals we should be aware of the signs and step in when we think someone needs help.  So what are the signs of depression?*

Religious Responsibilities

How do you respond when a colleague tells you they want to switch their Easter weekend with Eid or Pesach?

Accommodating religious beliefs at work is something all employers have to think about.  The Equality Act (link http://www.equalities.gov.uk/equality_act_2010.aspx) gives employees protection against direct and indirect discrimination on the grounds of religion or belief.

Is One of Your Employees Pregnant?

What do you do when a person who is vital to your business tells you they’re pregnant?

Well, there’s the practical stuff – the HMRC will tell you all about maternity pay. Direct gov will tell you what their rights are, and will be a good source of information for them.
