Redundancy

Despite best efforts, sometimes redundancies are unavoidable; however, there are ways to go about to avoid inadvertent discrimination and treat the individuals you need to make redundant fairly and with dignity. Inclusive Employers outlines:

  • when redundancy occurs;
  • legal considerations;
  • useful links and guidance on inclusive approaches to major aspects of the employment life cycle.

Here's a taste of what you'll read as a member on our website...

Redundancy | Employers should take all possible steps to avoid redundancies and one of the best ways to minimise the risk of job losses is to maximise inclusivity and flexibility within the workforce, by creating a culture of working together and sharing the good times and the bad. Employees may be prepared to accept a short-term reduction in hours or even pay if they love their job and care about their employer. | A redundancy arises when: - An employer stops, or intends to stop the part of the business that the person was employed for. - An employer stops, or intends to stop the business in the location at which the person was employed. - The needs of the business for employees to do certain types of work has stopped or reduced (or are expected to stop or reduce). - The needs of the business for employees to do certain types of work in the location at which the person was employed has stopped or reduced (or are expected to stop or reduce). | The extent to which employers are required to consult on potential redundancies and the process they should adopt is dependent in part on the scale of job losses. If it is possible that more than 20 jobs will be lost, members are encouraged to seek advice on their approach, as extensions to this policy may be needed...
