Harnessing the modern talented workforce | The workforce of the future is talented, diverse, and it’s here. Twelve percent of the current working-age population (that’s 4.4 million people) in the UK come from an ethnic minority background and increasing numbers of Black, Asian, and minority ethnic (BAME) young people are graduating from higher education. However, less than 60% are employed, compared to 75% of working-age white Britons. | What’s more, UK consumer demographics are changing. BAMEs have approximately £300bn in spending power, yet they remain largely untapped markets. To access into these markets, and do the best business possible in the current British context, the racial makeup of your organisation should not only reflect society, but also enable your employees to achieve their maximum potential, both individually and working together. | Recruitment and retention | One of the biggest roadblocks to achieving a racially diverse workplace is in recruitment. Many companies and industries continue to be perceived as unwelcoming to BAME applicants, so it is critical for employers to be proactive about seeking out qualified candidates from minority ethnic backgrounds, as well as fostering a company culture that is inclusive. That means advertising vacancies in BAME-oriented platforms, maintaining an open dialogue amongst all employees, and having the full, active backing of senior management. It doesn’t mean hiring regardless of qualification just to get a ‘mixed bag’ in the office.
