Legislation concerning foreign workers has been changing recently, creating confusion amongst employers and sometimes preventing them from hiring talented candidates. Inclusive Employers cuts through the confusion by outlining:

Foreign Workers | A world of opportunity | Whether graduating from British higher education, applying for better employment opportunities from abroad, or entering the UK workforce as refugees or asylum seekers, foreign workers make up a significant proportion of the total UK employment population (12.7% in 2008). Although many foreign workers seeking employment in the UK are skilled and highly qualified (about 30% of refugees alone are professionals), stigma and fear around hiring continues to exist amongst UK employers and prevent talented candidates from acquiring jobs. Just remember, you're out to find the best people for your organisation. If they happen to be a foreign national, you don't have to be afraid to hire them. | What the law says | Immigration laws have been updated as of 6 April 2011 and are expected to continue to change over the course of the next few years, so it's critical to make sure you are aware of the most current regulations. If you are employing a foreign national currently in the UK with a visa that allows them to work, you will need to contact the UK Border Agency to verify your employee's documentation over the phone and keep copies on file. If you are actively recruiting from overseas or considering a candidate who will need to transition to a visa without working restrictions, you will most likely need to work with them in obtaining a Tier 2 visa.
